Situated in central Kentucky, Canton Cooperage is in the heart of the U.S. white oak forests. The area is also fortunate to have a labor force highly skilled in the cooperage trade. Canton Cooperage took advantage of these resources and began producing bourbon barrels in 1983. Canton Wood Products purchased the business in 1987 and began the transition to high quality wine barrels. A new stave mill was built to meet the growing need for air-dried staves and heading.
By 1994, the cooperage was producing only premium American oak wine barrels. Finally, in 1998, Canton Cooperage became a member of the Chene & Cie Group, which operates cooperages and stave mills in the U.S. and France, including Tonnellerie Taransaud in Cognac.
